Workers Defense is seeking a legal case manager who is eager to organize with immigrant workers to build power and fight for dignity and respect. The ideal candidate will have experience working directly with low-income workers and/or immigrants, educating the community, and managing legal cases. They will have strong communication skills — in both English and Spanish — that will allow them to develop relationships with Workers Defense members and staff, allied organizations, and government agencies. The candidate should be able to maintain attention to detail while managing multiple responsibilities. The Legal Manager/Organizer will play a critical role in developing member-leaders, executing campaigns that protect immigrants’ rights and raise industry standards, and strengthening Workers Defense’s legal services program.  

The Legal Manager/Organizer is a union-eligible position.

FUNCIONES DEL CARGO

  • Recruiting, training, and supervising Workers Defense members who volunteer as Defensores Laborales to assist fellow members in employment disputes and educate one another on labor rights    
  • Supporting the leadership development of Workers Defense members—especially those with active employment cases—through collaboration with Workers Defense organizers, policy coordinators, communications team, and other staff on events, trainings, and campaigns
  • Responding to callers and Workers Defense members seeking legal assistance with know-your-rights information, referrals, and motivating them to take collective action   
  • Managing employment and labor law cases under the supervision of an attorney, advocating on behalf of clients, tracking progress of claims with courts, government agencies, and following up on case referrals
  • Maintaining and updating case files, call logs, and tracking data about the activities of the Houston legal services program
  • Planning and overseeing a monthly employment rights clinic that occurs on the 2nd Tuesday of the month from 7-9pm
  • Designing, updating and training members on know-your-rights materials in both English and Spanish
  • Cultivating strong working relationships with local, state and federal agencies, community organizations, and partner attorneys
  • Engaging in community education and outreach around workers’ rights and immigrants’ rights
  • Additional tasks as assigned

LO QUE NECESITAS:

  • Strong proficiency speaking, reading, and writing in both English and Spanish
  • Strong personal organization and time management skills, and attention to detail 
  • Proven ability to take initiative, think creatively and strategically, act assertively when necessary, and speak confidently in public;
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups of people of varying abilities, agendas, and backgrounds
  • Experience managing different responsibilities, delegating tasks, and contributing to the success of a team
  • Ability to work some nights and weekends
  • Knowledge of community organizing, labor issues, or immigration and employment law
  • Commitment to racial and economic justice.

NUESTRA OFERTA:

  • Workers Defense has a salary scale that is based on experience in the role, starting salary for this position is $60,000.
  • $1,000 annual bilingual language stipend.

  • Paid leave consists of 10 days vacation, 10 days sick, and 5 days personal. 
  • Paid holidays in addition to office closures the week of Thanksgiving and  December 23rd through 31st.
  • Every other Friday off.
  • Retirement plan with company match of 3% (as per our Personnel Policies Manual). 
  • Parental leave of 12 weeks paid (after probationary period – 90 days from hire).
